Although there are many benefits to geothermal energy there are some disadvantages as well. Although there are few the cons that there are tend to be big problems.

-In Reykjavik, Iceland, the whole city is powered by geothermal energy.

Geothermal Energy is an different way to heat and cool your home. It doesn't burn fuel and releases less than one percent of carbon dioxide. Even though it is a clean energy source there are disadvantages.

The first disadvantage being that you get the steam from sights that release steam, like volcanoes and geysers. Those sights might stop emitting steam randomly for up to ten years. So while everything is going good, the steam might just stop coming with no warning, and there will be no energy source for years. This is a problem since you can't do anything but wait until the steam starts coming up again. Also The steam is not available in many places. The places they are located tend to be in harsh locations which make it hard to place a power plant. These locations tend to be volcanoes and as you can imagine it is not easy to set up a plant near a volcano. Once you find a place were the steam is available you then need to set up a plant. Although setting up a plant takes a long time. In order to set one up you need a survey about the land taken. These surveys can take years. Sometime you find a place to put a plant but the land ends up being unstable. This happens a lot since it has to be near hot spots. There are lots of steps to start a plant, and drilling to get the steam is the most important. When drilling for the steam sometimes harmful gases can be released into the air.
